Booking a winter trip is an annual ritual for skiers and those looking for warmer temps. There are also practical reasons for winter touring, including cheaper airfares and hotel rooms, and less traffic than the holidays and summertime. For those who like solitude and a nice bargain, the off-season can be perfect to get away.

According to the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) about 38 people have died snowboarding or skiing during the past 10 years, on average. Although most ski mountains don't require it, it's a good idea to wear a helmet. The best way to avoid a collision is to follow basic safety rules including stay in control, stop in a safe place for you and others and when starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield. It is also important to obey signs designating slow zones and intersecting areas. It is recommended that all skiers and snowboarders share the slopes and always show respect for others.

Wherever you are, wash your hands frequently and carry hand sanitizer for times when soap and water are not available. If possible, get a flu shot before you leave. Because airplanes recycle air, immune deficient people such as cancer patients can be susceptible to germs. Before flying, many experienced travelers consume supplements that provide a boost to the immune system.

If driving through snowy or icy climates, use common sense. Carry blankets, water, a flashlight, scraper, shovel, lock deicer, nutrition bars or candy. Remember that 4-wheel drive vehicles won't stop any better in icy conditions than conventional vehicles.
